The forest-photovoltaic complementation is a unique afforestation model that fully utilizes the sufficient space between photovoltaic panels and the ground with a height difference of more than 2 meters. It generates electricity by receiving sunlight above the photovoltaic modules while cultivating shade-tolerant crops in the lower space, thus achieving efficient utilization of land resources and letting the photovoltaic power generation organically combine with the development of the forestry industry.
As the first renewable energy demonstration zone in China, Zhangjiakou ensures that the nature of the occupied forest land is not altered in the implementation of photovoltaic forestry projects. The construction is carried out by planting shrubs or sub-trees between the solar panels and underneath them, with a ratio of 50% afforestation area and 50% photovoltaic power station area. Nowadays, "forest-photovoltaic complementation" has become a unique afforestation model in Zhangjiakou.
The exploration and practice of the forest-photovoltaic complementation in mountainous counties not only addresses the challenges of improving the forest quality in barren mountainous areas, but also utilizes the advantage of forest land resources in mountainous counties to solve the problem of scarcity of land for photovoltaic power generation industry, and promote the rapid development of the local new energy industry economy.
